APPLICATION NOTE

Here are a few possible applications of the Frame Relay SCC module:

Implementing the Frame Relay Solution

Frame Relay is a packet switching technology widely used in WAN (Wide Area Networks) with high throughput rates and good response times. Frame Relay provides the ability to multiplex several logical connections over a single physical link and to dynamically allocate bandwidth.

Implementing the data link layer in hardware results in fast data processing. Software, relieved from low-level tasks, can more efficiently process higher layers of the protocol, such as signaling, local management, or congestion control.

In order to implement a complete Frame Relay solution, the Frame Relay SCC module has to interface to a physical layer transceiver appropriate to the transmission technology used. The transceiver connection is a serial 4-wire interface. On the system side, the module interfaces with an embedded processor, which runs software implementing higher layers of the protocol.

Other Applications

Frame Relay data link layer, or LAPF (Q.922) is derived from the ubiquitous HDLC protocol. HDLC is a base of many other networking applications and technologies, such as X.25 (LAPB), LAPD (Q.921), Signaling System 7 (SS7), PPP in HDLC-like Framing (RFC 1662). Since the Frame Relay module is distributed as a source code, slight modification of the design can address these other applications. TRILENT Networks’  broad software licensing was tailored to accommodate such extensions.
