The service will not auto start with startup type set to automatic. Why?
The most likely reason is that your networking subsystem loads with a delay at startup. The Trilent™  FTP Proxy is a Windows service. Services load at startup with other operating system components before user-level programs. If your networking system is implemented as a user-level software (as is the case with satellite Internet or some DSL), the network interfaces do not yet exist when the proxy service attempts to start.

If this is your case, there is a simple workaround. Let us know, and we'll email you a simple program that starts the Trilent FTP Proxy service. Copy the program to the "Startup" folder and the proxy will always be started after the network. This workaround does not change the fact that the network must start before the proxy service startup. It simply starts the proxy service with other user-level programs. For it to work, your DSL must be started from the "Startup" folder also.

When installing a new version, must I first uninstall the current version? Do I need a new license for the new version or can I use my current one?
You do not need to uninstall the earlier version. The Setup will automatically uninstall the previous version before installing the new one. The configuration data will be preserved and (if you have purchased the product) your permanent registration key will unlock the new version, so there is no need to enter it again. For evaluation copy of the product, you have to get a free 30-day instant license from within the configuration applet. It is a simple, one-click process.

I was using an evaluation version of the ftp proxy. After purchasing the product, I'm having trouble activating my license and the proxy no longer works. What is the procedure to setup the product and activate the license?
You have to remember that the free evaluation copy of version 1.4 is different from the purchased version and use different registration codes. You can only download the purchased version with a link provided during the purchasing process. You can install the purchased copy over the evaluation copy you already have. All configuration settings will be preserved. The temporary registration code you received after the purchase (as well as the permanent code) will work with the purchased copy of the product, but not with the trial copy.

When I try to start the service I get an error message: A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the system clock or the timestamp in the signed file.
The proxy requires a registration key in order to run. For the evaluation copy of the product, you have to get a free 30-day instant license from within the configuration applet.

How many client computers can the FTP Proxy support?
The current version of the Trilent FTP Proxy supports 60 concurrent connections. Since not all users access the proxy at the same time, that probably means maximum of 70-140 users.

Can I access the FTP Proxy with a Web browser?
Yes. Beginning with version 1.4, the Trilent FTP Proxy works with Web browsers. This allows you to access FTP sites through the familiar user interface similar to that used for Web pages. Please refer to Data Sheet for the list of supported brands.

Does the FTP Proxy store data for some time before forwarding them to server?
There is no store-and-forward. The Trilent FTP Proxy forwards files "on the fly", with little or no delays.

When I try to start the proxy service the following message appears: Could not start the service on the local computer. Error 13: The data is invalid.  What does it mean?
It means the configuration database is empty or incomplete. The proxy must be configured before the first start. The setup program automatically configures the proxy during installation by entering the correct IP addresses for the inside and outside interfaces of your computer. If these fields are left blank, it means the setup could not reliably determine the correct interface addresses. You have to enter them manually. The Help system provides detailed instructions and explanations.

Can the FTP Proxy be installed on a computer with only one NIC (network interface) in order to proxy multiple FTP clients on the network?
Yes, it can. Simply enter the same IP address (the address of the single NIC) in both "Inside Interface" and "Outside Interface" fields of the proxy configuration applet. Users are able to access any FTP server on the network, as described in the User Manual.

If you use both the (forward) proxy and the reverse proxy, you have to prevent both of them from listening on the same IP address and port. (The Windows networking subsystem permits only one user of any IP address/port combination.) You can either disable one of them (the proxy or the reverse proxy), or configure one with a non-standard port (e.g. 270), while the other uses the standard FTP port (21).

How can I verify the integrity of the download file?
The digital signature is embedded in the file. The verification procedure is very simple: right-click on the download file (e.g. TrilentFtpProxy14.exe), Click on "Properties" menu, click on "Digital Signatures" tab, and then click on "Details" button.
Note: Internet connection is required, so your computer can contact and query the signature authority (e.g. VeriSign).
I am having problems uploading to site when using the proxy. I can connect to the FTP site via the proxy and download all I want but when I try to upload I get access denied even if the user has full permissions to the directory that the files are uploaded to. Any suggestions?
Your problem looks like a permissions issue on the FTP server. It is unlikely to have anything to do with the proxy. Sometimes a server has a list of hosts (IP addresses or names) that are permitted to use FTP. Make sure the host running the proxy is on the list. Very often permissions for upload are more restrictive than for the download.

Do you have an FTP Proxy that implements RFC 2228 and RFC 4217?
The current version of the Trilent FTP Proxy does not support security/TLS. It is planned for a future release.

We are using Port 80 between the FTP Client and FTP Proxy which are on two different LAN segments (Client: xx.xx.233.xx and FTP Proxy: xx.xx.234.xx). What other port assignments besides "80" are needed to be opened between the two LAN segments to allow for FTP connections via proxy?
The FTP proxy initiates the data connection from its default data port to client-specified port on the client. This behavior is required by the FTP specification (RFC 959, section 5.2). The default data port is one less than the control port (in your case that would be port 79). The client (destination) data port is determined by the PORT command sent by the client. You should open the port assignment for "79" (from proxy to client).

What's the application-level proxy? How does it differ from other proxies? Is it important? Why should I care?
The application-level proxy offers superior security to your network. Other proxies (known as transparent proxies, circuit-level proxies, or Network Address Translators), are not so secure. They simply indiscriminately translate from one IP address/port to another.

Modern Internet threats (which tend to penetrate simple network defenses) resulted in renewed interest in application-level proxies. These products are known under various marketing names, usually as "security appliances" or "security servers" (e.g. Microsoft ISA Server).

I am new to proxy servers. Will your support group help me through the setup procedure, if needed?
Absolutely! However, the proxy is very easy to use. The setup involves a few simple steps. The context-sensitive Help provides step-by-step instructions and explains what you need to do and why in excruciating detail. (Many users praise our help system.)

Is the FTP Proxy free from computer viruses?
This product is guaranteed to be virus-free (and verified by independent testing.) The download file (and the executables within) are protected from any modifications with a tamper-proof digital signature. A cryptographic certificate issued to Trilent Networks by a certificate authority (VeriSign) protects the signature from forgery and verifies authenticity of the software.

Can you change our registration name and the contact email address? This person is not working here anymore.
Unfortunately, we do not refund purchases and do not allow any changes after the permanent code is issued. After the purchase, we give our customers about two weeks before issuing the permanent code to give them time to make sure the product is working for them and to request any changes. We suggest using the company name as the registration name.
