FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The service will not auto start with startup type set to automatic. Why?
The most likely reason is that your networking subsystem loads with a delay at startup. The Trilent™  Mail Proxy is a Windows service. Services load at startup with other operating system components before user-level programs. If your networking system is implemented as a user-level software (as is the case with satellite Internet or some DSL), the network interfaces do not yet exist when the proxy service attempts to start.

If this is your case, there is a simple workaround. Let us know, and we'll email you a simple program that starts the Trilent Mail Proxy service. Copy the program to the "Startup" folder and the proxy will always be started after the network. This workaround does not change the fact that the network must start before the proxy service startup. It simply starts the proxy service with other user-level programs. For it to work, your DSL must be started from the "Startup" folder also.

When installing a new version, must I first uninstall the current version? Do I need a new license for the new version or can I use my current one?
You do not need to uninstall the earlier version. The Setup will automatically uninstall the previous version before installing the new one. The configuration data will be preserved and (if you have purchased the product) your permanent registration key will unlock the new version, so there is no need to enter it again. However, the free temporary evaluation keys are different.

When I try to start the service I get an error message: A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the system clock or the timestamp in the signed file. Does it mean that the trial period is over?
That is correct. However, we have a very liberal evaluation policy. You can request another trial registration key from our license server if you want.

Note: The proxy requires a registration key in order to run. For time-limited evaluation purposes, a free temporary registration key is provided online. Enter the registration key (code) into the control panel applet as shown in the User Manual.

I can send messages but I cannot receive them as the proxy asks me for password for my gateway. Please help.
The Trilent Mail Proxy does not require any passwords. It simply passes messages between mail client and mail server. What you are seeing is most likely the POP3 server (server for the incoming mail) asking your mail client for the account password.

Does the Mail Proxy support DHCP server?
No. The Trilent Mail Proxy supports fixed IP addresses, as opposed to the DHCP server assigned dynamic addresses. This is by design. Small networks should use fixed IP addresses for better stability and security.

How many client computers can the Mail Proxy support?
Mail Proxy supports 30 concurrent mail connections. Since all users do not send/receive mail at the same time, that probably means maximum of 60-80 users. The number 30 is arbitrary and could be increased, but there is a practical limit. At around 30 computers (users), the cumulative cost of so many mailboxes on the ISP's server becomes excessive. You are better off commissioning a dedicated mail server for your network.

When I try to start the service, I get the error message: " Could not start the service. Error 10048" Any suggestions?
The error you got is a WinSock (networking) error: "address already in use." Networking subsystem normally permits only one user of an IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.17) and port (e.g. 110) combination. The error means that there is another program (most likely mail program of sorts) on your computer that uses that address. That is assuming you use default ports in your configuration. If you use non-default ports, you may be "stepping" on another server. It is also possible that a "dead" version of the mail proxy service (i.e. service that was terminated incorrectly for some reason) may block the address. While it is very unlikely, you can easily eliminate that cause from consideration by re-booting your computer. We suggest you follow the debugging procedure in the User Manual.

I get the following error when I attempt to start the service: "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"
The problem you described looks like authentication failure. Trilent Mail Proxy is a licensed program. In order to use the proxy, you have to unlock it with a registration key. For time-limited evaluation purposes, a temporary registration key is provided free of charge online. When you purchase the program, you will receive a permanent registration key via email.

The Mail Proxy service will not start anymore. Here is the error: "Could not start the Trilent Mail Proxy service. Error 2186: The service is not responding to the control function."
Another authentication failure. If you have been using the program for some time (a month), your temporary license key might have just expired. Please see the answer to the previous question.

There seem to be a disproportional number of the Mail Proxy errors that are occurring at startup. Why is that?
This is by design. We have aggregated as many critical operations as possible in the initialization phase. This way the fatal errors happen mostly during startup, when they are readily apparent to the user. We believe that this approach (although not without its drawbacks) results in a more reliable operation.

Does the Mail Proxy send out the emails immediately to the SMTP server? Or does it hold (store) them for some time within the application? Is there a possibility of emails being "stuck" within the proxy and not sent out to the SMTP server?
Trilent Mail Proxy sends/receives email messages immediately as they come. There is no store-and-forward. Moreover, the protocol engine is implemented as a single-pass finite state machine. A finite state machine is predictable and it cannot "hang" and then "un-hang" later. As a result, the proxy usually passes messages with little or no delays. However, the proxy is still a subject to network delays (DNS lookups, connection establishment, data transfer, and server-induced delays).

Is the Mail Proxy free from computer viruses?
The downloadable Setup file and the executables within are protected with tamper-proof cryptographic signatures and are certified virus-free.
